Obituary of Dora Mae Norris, maiden name Dora Mae Hawley, age 86, living in Las Vegas, Nevada, died of complications of congestive heart failure, COPD and diverticulitis on Friday, December 9, 2016. Dora was born on August 23,, 1930 at home in Rust Township, Montmorency County, Michigan to Percy and Lucina L.C. Hawley. She grew up on a small farm near Hillman, Michigan along with her five siblings, Edward, Eleanor, Donald, Sylvia and Alton. Dora grew up during the end of the Great Depression.
Dora is survived by her brother Alton, and her six children listed eldest to youngest: Gwendolyn Eileen Hansen, Cathie Phyllis Jesse, Vikki Lynn Mahaffy, Robert Percy Norris, Lawrence Jay Norris, and Jerome Kent Norris. Her children have blessed her with 17 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren.
While Dora started her life in Michigan, she moved west to Las Vegas Nevada in her early 20s where she raised her six children and continued her career as a waitress. Dora worked as a waitress for over 40 years. In the 80's, she moved to Kentucky to fulfill her dream of owning her own restaurant. In addition to waitress work, Dora was a dedicated sales person who sold Avon, Amway, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, Stanley cleaning products. ReLiv and many other things.. In addition to working full time and being a single parent, Dora dedicated many hours to service as a Senior Regent in the Loyal Order of the Moose.
Once she retired, Dora dedicated her life to working with young people as a library aid and adult mentor for wayward children. She was a dedicated servant in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints giving her time to home visits and service to her church. She loved working on her Family History as it was one of the most important things to her.
Dora loved to read and enjoyed self help books as well as a large variety of westerns. She loved words and puzzles spending many hours completing jigsaw or word puzzles. Dora was a noted seamstress who made many of the clothes she wore and her children wore including the wedding dresses worn by her three daughters. She loved to crochet.
Dora will be remembered for her "unwavering" faith in her Heavenly Father, her ability to accept and love others without judgment, and her dedication to her children.
