Martin Raymond Ryan

May 7, 1944 — January 4, 2023

Las Vegas, Nevada

On January 4, 2023, Martin Raymond Ryan passed away at Valley Hospital due to heart failure. He was 78 years old. He is survived by his loving wife Karen, his two sons, Mark and Daniel and four grandchildren.

Martin, or “Marty,” as he liked to be called, was born on May 7, 1944. He came to the Las Vegas valley at a very young age, and he continued to stay in Las Vegas throughout the remainder of his life. As his family was of the Catholic Faith, he attended primary school at St. Joseph’s and attended High School at Bishop Gorman.

Marty was an excellent athlete. He was a four year letterman in both football and baseball at Bishop Gorman High School. He played halfback in football and centerfielder in baseball. He attended Northern Arizona University on a baseball scholarship. After college, he played both fast pitch and slo-pitch softball. He was a longtime runner who competed in a multitude of 10k’s and half marathons.

After graduating from high school, Marty received a baseball scholarship and attended Northern Arizona University, where he majored in accounting. After graduating, he owned and worked at a winery, and then he worked as an accountant at several major Las Vegas properties, including the Dunes, the Landmark and Cannery Resorts, to name a few. He watched and experienced this town grow from an oasis in the desert to the resort powerhouse its is today.

Marty prided himself most in being a caring and benevolent father to his two sons. He raised his son Mark to be a doctor, a pediatric surgeon, and his son Daniel to be a trial attorney. His son Daniel especially would not have been able to undertake and complete his undergraduate school and law school had it not been for the love and assistance of Marty and his wife Karen.

Marty was known to those who knew him best as a joker and a cynic, and whenever he and his buddies would get together there was always a good time. Marty spent many summers with his college and other close friends in Montana, where they would all reunite and share their trials and tribulations, and of course give one another good-natured ribbing. There was so much laughter and joy shared on those occasions. Marty cherished the nature and fresh air of Montana so much that he purchased a home there and lived there for some years during the summer months.

Marty spent most of his twilight years with his wife Karen at their Las Vegas home in Painted Desert. Marty highly enjoyed his hard-earned retirement, and he spent most of his days watching sports, barbecuing, and playing poker machines. He was otherwise visited by his son Daniel and Daniel’s wife Karen, his other son Mark, as well as his two grandchildren who lived locally, Krissy and Katalina.

As his mortality drew near, Marty took pride in knowing he had been part of the history and experience of Las Vegas. He also took great pride in knowing that he had created and maintained a wonderful family to carry on his legacy. The town is not the same without him; his family is not the same without him. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Marty, you were a wonderful, caring human being

Memorial Service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5830 Mesa Park Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89135. Service will be on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 11:00am.
