He was known for his dedication to academics and lifelong learning. Michael will be remembered for his infectious laugh and his unique level of intelligence. Even through many injuries, he was able to keep his intellect sharp. Michael loved anything having to do with outdoor sports: motorcycle riding, horseback riding from a young age, rock climbing, hiking mountains, water sports, and many more. He had even invested in a pair of jumping stilts. He appreciated the beauty of nature as well, particularly colorful sunsets! Michael loved animals, and they loved him back; he had had many cats (one at a time) over his life; and had a beloved dog named Bandit (a Jack Russell Terrier gifted to him by his grandfather in Wales). In addition, with his background in computer science, he enjoyed computer gaming and prided himself on winning. He was a talented salesman too!

Michael kept his faith through the many physical and mental struggles he endured. He believed in God to the end and had an experience that showed him what “the other side” is like.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Michael Austin and two brothers: David Austin and Christopher Austin. He is survived by his mom, Anita Ortega, with whom he had a special relationship and for whom he took care of for fifteen years; his two sisters: LeeAnn A. Rooney and Lynnette Woolf; and his sister-in-law, Mary Jude Austin. In addition, he has many surviving nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to knowledge, his infectious laughter, and desire to connect with good friends. He placed a high degree of importance on accuracy of facts.
